Shape note singing in Berlin
WHEN: Every Thursday, 7:30 – 10pm
WHERE: Refugio, Lenaustraße 4, 12047 Berlin – conference room on the 2nd floor (former “Tanzraum”)
No audition required, no strings attached – just come by and sing with us. We will give everyone an introduction into Shape Note Singing. Loaner books are available. No fees, we only collect small voluntary donations for the rent of our room.
Kein Vorsingen, keine Verpflichtungen. Kommt einfach vorbei und singt mit. Wir geben euch gerne eine Einführung ins Shape Note Singen. Gesangbücher zum Ausleihen sind vorhanden. Keine Kosten, wir sammeln lediglich kleine freiwillige Spenden für die Raummiete.
We are a small but growing group of Berlin residents from all over the world (that’s why this page is in English!). The one thing we have in common is our love for singing shape note music. We meet every week and sing from our song books, The Sacred Harp and The Shenandoah Harmony. If you want to sing with us, you don’t need anything: we have loaner books, and regularly order new books from the USA so that you can purchase one if you would like to.
We are NOT a choir in the traditional sense! We don’t have a leader (everyone takes turns in leading songs), we don’t have a repertoire (just our book) and we don’t rehearse or perform – we just sing. You don’t need to apply or to audition – you don’t even have to know how to read music. The shapenote system was developed specifically to teach people without musical knowledge to sight-sing, and it works! Just come by and try it out.
Shape Note music is loud, raw, raucous, very emotional – and very religious. But it doesn’t matter whether what or if you believe – people of all faiths sing Sacred Harp.
